HOUSE OF THE SCORPION
BY Anna Claire Shuman

For my reading bowl book, I read House of The Scorpions. I was surprised that I liked this book because the beginning was very slow and not much happened. Also, at the beginning, the plot was a little hard to follow. I liked how at first Matt was naïve but as the book went on, he actually came to more of an understanding about the world he was living in. I liked how Maria was friendly to him, but I didn't like her because she was a little bit boring. I found the character of El Patron very interesting, although he was horrible and sick. He had so many layers, and it was interesting to watch his real personality come through. There were some bits of the book that I found not interesting and seemed to drag on forever. I liked how even though most were true to him, he had some close relationships, like Maria, Tam Lin, and Celia. I feel like they were the only people who saw him as a real person and not just a dirty clone. Overall, this book was good and had some very sad points, like when Tam Lin died and Celia had to explain it to Matt. There were some things that I would have changed but all in all it was pretty good.

house of the scorpions

For my reading bowl book, I read House Of The Scorpions. It was a book about a young "boy" named Matteo Alcrean who is taken care of by a female gaurdian who was very kind to him. But then he gets hurt by stepping on glass, and one thing happens after another, and he finds out that he is actually a clone of the most powerful and rich drug lord ever, a man in his mid 140's named El Patron. that's right, he's 140 years old.
I loved the character descriptions. Tam Lin was my favorite character, a uneducated and kind bodyguard. the way he was portrayed as the mentor but also the one who was being taught by Matt was incredible. Celia was also showed well, as the lovable cook. the author made sure that the reader got exactly what he was saying.
It was very clever of the author in all of the names, places, and basically the whole book and plot. it was so creative, something that I would never think of that. on the other hand, it was sometimes a little far fetched and boring, like when opium had the lockdown. it seemed like all the author was trying to do was to make the story longer.
All in all, i thought that the House Of The Sorpions was a great book. It was creative, interesting, and fun to read. there were many parts that made me just think and wonder how the author could have came up with something like this. when Celia explained to matt about the death of the alcreans and Tam lin, i just knew that this was so clever and so hard to do. they way that the author showed the cleverness of ton ton and how chaco and felddilito were so important to matt was great.
i would definitely recommend this next year.

House of the Scorpion
Derrick Redwine,
For my reading-bowl book I read The House of the Scorpion. I did not like The House of the Scorpion. I was surprised by that. Science fiction is my favorite genre of books. This book just seemed not necessary. There was so much more than there needed to be in the book. I liked Matt. Matt is a young clone. In the beginning of the book he was naïve. When he steps on the glass his adventure starts. He learns more and more about himself. He learns why El Patron cloned himself. El Patron is over 140 years old. El Patron needed organs after his failed. That was Matt’s purpose.
I did not like Maria. If she was not Matt’s friend, the book would have been much more interesting. The book would have been more interesting because, Matt would have to do more on his own. I hated Tam Lin. I am not big fans of most of the good people in books. Tam Lin became a father figure for Matt. There would have been more action without Tam Lin. Just like for Maria, the book would have been more interesting without Tam Lin.
I like El Patron. He was the opposition to Matt. I was confused when he saved Matt at first. It was later when I found out why he did it. It was for himself. I can do things like that sometimes. That is when I started liking him a little more. I also like the bad guys most of the time in books.
Making the country of Opium was not necessary. Just use an actual country, and set it in the future. Cloning is cool in most books, but I think Nancy Farmer could have done better with it. I noticed why it was needed in the book, but she spent too much time on certain subjects and not enough on others. The climax of the book was a little boring to me. I might just think that because most books that I have read have had awesome climaxes. I would not recommend this book for anyone like me next year.
